How to Merge Two Orders on Shopify Into One

Merge two Shopify orders into one order step by step: the manual edit-and-cancel walkthrough, the one-click app method, and what happens to shipping and taxes.

Same customer, two orders, minutes apart. It happens in every store: they forgot an item, went back, and checked out again. Now you want to merge the two orders into one so you pick once, pack once, and pay for one label.

The short answer: Shopify has no merge button. To merge two orders into one, either edit the first order to add the second order's items and then cancel order two, or use an order merging app like MergeIt that combines both orders in one click and keeps shipping, taxes, and reports intact.

Can You Merge Two Orders on Shopify?

Not natively. There is no "merge orders" action in the Shopify admin, on any plan. Each order is a fixed record of one checkout, with its own payment, taxes, and shipping - Shopify never combines two of them for you.

That said, merging two orders is absolutely doable. You have two working paths: a manual one using Shopify's built-in order editing, and a one-click one using an app. Below is the exact walkthrough for both.

Before You Merge: A 30-Second Checklist

Merging only makes sense when all of this is true:

  • Both orders are unfulfilled. Once one has shipped, there is nothing to merge.
  • Same customer, same shipping address. If the addresses differ, ask the customer which one is correct first.
  • Both orders are paid (or you are fine collecting the difference on one of them).
  • No conflicting discounts. A free-shipping-over-X discount or a one-time code can change value when items move between orders - check before, not after.

All green? Pick your method.

Method 1: Merge Two Orders Manually (Order Editing)

This uses Shopify's native order editing to move everything into order one, then removes order two. It works on every plan.

  1. Open the second order in Shopify admin โ†’ Orders and note every line item, quantity, and the shipping fee paid
  2. Open the first order and click Edit (top right)
  3. Add each item from the second order, matching quantities exactly
  4. Click Update order - Shopify recalculates taxes on the added items
  5. Since the customer already paid for these items on order two, refund the second order in full: open it, click Refund, refund all items and the shipping
  6. Cancel the second order and leave a note on both orders referencing each other
  7. Restock is handled by the refund flow - double-check inventory wasn't counted twice for the moved items

The result: one order with all items, ready to fulfill as a single shipment.

๐Ÿšจ Watch out for:

  • The cancelled order still sits in your sales reports, and the refund can cost you payment processing fees
  • The customer receives a cancellation and refund email for order two, which reads like something went wrong
  • Forgetting to refund the second shipping fee is the most common mistake
  • Every merge is 5-10 minutes of careful clicking - fine once, painful weekly

Order editing has its own limits (fulfilled items, some payment methods and channels) - see how to edit a Shopify order after it's placed for the details.

Method 2: Merge Two Orders in One Click (MergeIt)

An order merging app does the same consolidation as above in a single action, without the cancelled-order fallout:

  1. Install MergeIt from the Shopify App Store
  2. MergeIt detects the two orders from the same customer and suggests the merge - or you select the two orders yourself
  3. Click merge - both orders become one, with line items, totals, and tax data combined correctly
  4. Optionally, let MergeIt refund the double-paid shipping automatically

From then on, you don't even have to catch the double orders yourself. Set a rule like "auto-merge orders from the same customer within 24 hours to the same address" and the two-order case handles itself. Every merge lands in a history log and can be undone.

Curious what happens under the hood - taxes, inventory, notifications? That's covered in how order merging apps work.

What Happens to Payment, Shipping, and Taxes?

The three questions every merchant asks before their first merge:

Payment: Nothing is re-charged. The customer already paid both orders; merging just consolidates what those payments bought into one order. With the manual method, you refund order two and its value lives on inside the edited order one.

Shipping: The customer paid shipping twice but gets one parcel. Refund the second fee (manually or automatically via MergeIt) - or keep it where your policy allows. Either way, you only buy one label, which is where the real savings are: here's what shipping one parcel instead of two saves.

Taxes: With native order editing, Shopify recalculates tax on added items - usually fine, but discounts can skew it. A merging app carries over exactly what the customer paid, so nothing is double-counted and your tax reports stay accurate.

When You Can't Merge Two Orders

  • One order is fulfilled - it already shipped; refund or handle the second order separately
  • Different shipping addresses - confirm the destination with the customer before combining anything
  • Different customers - two people at the same address is a judgment call, not an automatic merge
  • Archived or cancelled orders - there's nothing active to combine

Which Method Should You Use?

SituationBest method
This is a rare one-off
Manual: edit order 1, cancel order 2
Double orders happen weekly or more
Merging app
You want double orders caught automatically
Merging app with auto-merge rules
You want zero app spend, whatever the effort
